Somewhere in a back room of a gallery space in Chicago, a performer stands in front of a rack of modular synthesizer modules that's roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase. There are no laptops visible. No MIDI controllers. Just a tangle of patch cables — maybe sixty, maybe more — connecting oscillators to filters to sequencers to effects in a web of signal flow that the performer themselves couldn't fully explain to you if they tried. That's kind of the point.

The music coming out of the PA is slow. Slower than you'd expect. A low drone that shifts almost imperceptibly over long minutes, punctuated by high overtones that appear and disappear like something glimpsed in peripheral vision. The audience, about thirty people, is mostly seated on the floor. A few have their eyes closed. Nobody is looking at their phones.

This is what modular synthesis looks like when it becomes something more than music production.

The Machine That Thinks Without You

There's a reason Eurorack modular synthesis has captured the imagination of a specific kind of artist — the kind who's less interested in making a hit than in having an experience. The format, which involves individual modules that generate, process, and route electrical signals according to how they're physically connected via patch cables, is constitutionally resistant to the kind of control that digital audio workstations offer.

You can program a DAW to do exactly what you want, every time, with perfect reproducibility. A modular system laughs at that. Analog oscillators drift with temperature. Modules interact in unexpected ways. A patch you built last week sounds subtly different today, because the voltage coming out of one module has shifted infinitesimally, and that shift has cascaded through eight other modules, and now the whole thing is doing something you didn't plan and can't fully account for.

For a lot of producers — especially ones who've spent years staring at computer screens, nudging automation curves, obsessing over sample-accurate timing — that unpredictability isn't a problem to be solved. It's a liberation.

Trance States and the Long Set

The artists operating at the intersection of modular synthesis and contemplative practice are doing something that runs counter to almost every norm of contemporary music performance. They're playing long. Really long. Sets of two, three, four hours aren't unusual in this scene. Some artists have done overnight performances, letting a patch evolve through an entire night and into the morning.

The logic behind this is rooted in how altered states of consciousness actually work. Whether you're talking about meditation, sensory deprivation, breathwork, or — yeah, we'll say it — psychedelics, the induction of a genuinely different mental state takes time. You can't rush it. The first twenty minutes of a long drone set are often the hardest: your mind is still running its normal loops, cataloging distractions, checking in with its own self-consciousness. But if the music holds steady, if it keeps evolving just enough to maintain attention without demanding it, something starts to shift.

That's the architecture these artists are building toward. Not a song. Not a composition in the traditional sense. More like an environment — a sustained acoustic space that the listener inhabits long enough for their relationship to their own mental activity to change.

The Tactile Dimension

Something that gets underemphasized in conversations about modular synthesis is how physical it is. Working with a Eurorack system means using your hands constantly — plugging and unplugging cables, turning knobs by fractions of a degree, physically rerouting signal flow in real time. There's a haptic feedback loop between the performer and the instrument that doesn't exist in the same way with a keyboard or a laptop.

Artists in this space describe the experience of patching in terms that sound a lot like descriptions of craft practices — pottery, weaving, woodworking. The attention required is specific and embodied. You're not thinking about the music in the abstract; you're thinking about what your hands are doing and what you're hearing and how those two things are connected. That narrowing of attention — that absorption in immediate, sensory, physical activity — is itself a kind of meditative state.

Some practitioners are explicit about the parallel. They talk about their modular practice the way someone might talk about a daily sitting practice, or a physical discipline like yoga. It's something they do every day, not to produce anything in particular, but to get themselves into a certain relationship with the present moment.

Countercultural Circuitry

It's worth noting what this scene is implicitly rejecting. The dominant mode of music production right now is software-based, screen-centric, and increasingly shaped by algorithmic feedback — producers making choices based on what the data says works, what gets playlisted, what converts to streams. The whole infrastructure of contemporary music production nudges you toward reproducibility, toward optimization, toward the kind of clean, punchy, attention-grabbing sound that performs well on a phone speaker.

Modular synthesis, especially in its most meditative, marathon-length expression, is the opposite of all that. It's slow. It's expensive in time and attention. It produces music that is genuinely difficult to playlist, because it doesn't have songs in any conventional sense. It's not optimized for anything except the experience of the person making it and the people in the room.

In that sense, it's a deeply countercultural practice — not in a performative, manifesto-waving way, but in the quiet, stubborn, this-is-how-I-choose-to-spend-my-time way that tends to be more durable.

Finding Community in the Patch Bay

Despite — or maybe because of — its solitary, inward-facing quality, the modular synthesis scene has built genuine community. Eurorack meetups happen in cities across the country, in record stores and hackerspaces and art galleries. Online forums dedicated to specific modules have the energy of passionate hobbyist communities, people sharing patches and discussing signal flow with the kind of genuine enthusiasm that's hard to fake.

What's interesting is how the community's values tend to align with the music's values. There's a notable emphasis on sharing knowledge freely, on helping beginners, on the idea that the practice is more important than the product. Nobody in these spaces is talking about going viral.

They're talking about what they heard in the sound last night, and what they're going to try to find in it tomorrow.

That might be the most radical thing about this whole scene. In a music culture built on attention and growth and metrics, these artists are just trying to get lost — and they've built a whole community around the practice of getting lost together.
